Omaha, Neb.  –The Bethel Women's tennis team competed this past weekend at the Central-West/Southwest ITA regional in Omaha Nebraska.  The ITA draw featured a 32-player field with two nationally ranked players from last season along with several top talented newcomers.  Bethel had their top four singles and top four doubles players competing in the main draw with three other players competing in the B draw.

On Friday in day one, three Lady Threshers advanced to the quarterfinals. In the round of 16 Bree Honer the number 3 seed defeated Frankie Eszes of Nebraska Wesleyan 6-1, 6-1.  Steph Shogren defeated another Nebraska Wesleyan player in the round of 16 the number 6 seeded Katherine Ternent in a dramatic three set 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 match.  And Allie Hipp with possibly her best win as a lady Thresher defeated Oklahoma's Baptist number four seeded Oliva Charvat 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the round of 16 giving the lady Thresher's three in the quarterfinals.  Madelyn Weaver was defeated in her round of 32 match versus Nebraska Wesleyan's number one player from a year ago in three set heart breaking 6-4, 6-7, 0-6 match.

Going in to Saturday, at least one Thresher was guaranteed a semi final berth as teammates Bree Honer and Steph Shogren were set to face off against one another in the quarterfinals.  Honer used your impressive ground strokes to keep Shogren on the move through out the entire match resulting in a 6-0, 6-0 win for Honer.  Allie Hipp was stuck in another long three setter as she took on the number 5 seeded Brooke Vorhees of McPherson.  Hipp took the first set 6-3 but simply ran out of gas in the second and third set as Vorhees took the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Honer met up with the number 2 seed Freshmen Kateryna Shkot of Oklahoma Baptist in the semifinals.  The two were neck and neck in the first before Shkot broke late giving here the first set 6-4.  Shkot continued her great play in the second using her huge forehand to break Honer twice late in the second giving her the 6-4, 6-1 victory.  Shkot of Oklahoma Baptist went on to win both the singles and the doubles crown at the ITA.

On the doubles side Madelyn Weaver and Allie Hipp fell in the first round to a very good Grand Valley team 8-4.  Steph Shogren and Bree Honer defeated Bethany 8-1 in their first round and Baker 8-4 in their second round before falling to eventual champions Shkot and Baranova of Oklahoma Baptist 8-1.

The ITA also featured a B draw for the rest of the team's players not in the A draw.  There were three Threshers who competed in this draw: Alyssa Scheuerman, Abby Viele and Rachel Shogren.  Scheuerman won her first match against Nebraska Wesleyan's Amanda Bueltel 6-2, 6-2, before falling in the next round to a very good player in Whitney Schutt 6-1, 6-2.  Abby Viele was defeated in her first round by Baker's Caroline Lockwood 6-0, 6-1.  Rachel Shogren also faced a tough first round defeat at the hands of Vallerie Zuaznabar of Kansas Wesleyan.  On the doubles side Shogren and Scheuerman teamed up to defeat a very good Midland team 8-6 in the opening round.  The two were then bested by Kansas Wesleyan's top duo of Tia Irwin and Cassidy Cook 8-1.

The Omaha ITA wrapped up the Lady Thresher's fall campaign; the team will be back in action this spring as the main season begins. The Thresher's will look to take home their sixth conference title in a row.
