NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - Picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll of the KCAC head coaches, Bethel Women's Tennis came into conference play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. After yesterday's 7-2 dismantling of the Bethany Swedes, Bethel (now 6-6, 5-2) can do no lower than fourth place as they clinched a berth into the four-team conference tournament. Bethel last appeared in the conference tournament in 2015, and this is head coach Richard Southern's first time making it, in his first year as a collegiate head coach. They have one more regular season matchup with Tabor on Saturday, before they head to Topeka to take part in the tournament next week Friday, April 28th.

The Lady Threshers started out strong, sweeping the doubles matches and heading into singles up 3-0 on the Swedes. The pairings of Kimberley Buzbee and Jennifer Harrison, along with Breanne Rogers and Mallory Meier easily took care of their opponents, each winning 8-0. The third doubles was an automatic win for Bethel by way of default.

It was at this point that Bethel actually clinched the match and the playoff berth since there were two more automatic defaults in the singles, but that doesn't sound very glamorous now does it? The Lady Threshers split with Bethany in their four singles matches with actual players. Serena Wong defeated Mikayla Monday of Bethany 6-2, 6-1 in the #2 position, while Harrison easily bested Jackie Bradshaw in the #3 position 6-2, 6-0.

Bethel heads to Tabor on Saturday to finish the regular season against their conference rival, and with a third place finish in the conference on the line. The match begins at 10:00 AM. You can see the complete scorecard for the match against Bethany down below.
