Kyle Wilson launches a new school record 16.01 meter throw in the shot put, moving him to 10th in the entire NAIA

NORTH NEWTON, Kan., - Kyle Wilson (JR/California City, Calif.) and Katelyn Fatten (SR/Riverside, CA) provided the individual highlights of the day for the Threshers here Saturday at the Bethel College Invitational held at Thresher Stadium while the women's team finished in the runner-up position in the team scoring.

Competing in front of a home crowd, including former school record holder Don Penner, Wilson upped his week old school record to win the shot put with a toss of 52 feet 6.5 inches. The throw also moved Wilson to No. 10 in the NAIA. Wilson finished off his day with an NAIA provisional qualifying mark of 157-7 in winning the discus. Joe Winfield added a season best in the shot with a throw of 35-1.75.

 

"Kyle has been throwing great the past two weeks," remarked Coach Jeff Hoskisson. "It was really cool to see him break his own school record and to be able to do it with Don (Penner) here."

 

Fatten took control of the women's 800 from the gun and continued to pull away from the field and recorded a personal best 2:26.25 for the win. Kendra Samuels (JR/Girard, KS) finished fifth in the race running a season best 2:52.67.

 

In addition to Fatten's win, the Lady Threshers had two additional event winners, four runner-ups, and three thirds.

 

Bryna Rietcheck (SR/Bavaria, KS) picked up the other event win taking the javelin title with a throw of 112-7. Sami Strauss picked up the runner-up finish in the event with a toss of 108-11. MaKenna Price (FR/Winfield, Kan.) took the title in the 100 hurdles in 18.41.

 

Rashe' Boynton (SR/Miami, Fla.), Bethany Montoya (SO/Red Oak, Texas), and Alyjah Kennedy (SO/San Diego, CA) accounted for the other three second place finishes. Boynton collected hers in the 100 running 12.24, Montoya ran 24:46.14 in the 5000, and Kennedy jump 34-9 in the triple jump.

 

Boynton and Kennedy combined with Fantasia Johnson (JR/Houston, Texas) and Veronica Ziegler (SR/Moundridge, KS) to take third in the 4x100 relay to open the meet. Johnson added thirds in the long jump with a leap of 15-11 and the 400 running a season best 1:02.09.

 

Besides Wilson's two event wins, the men added a second by Julio Martinez (JR/Phoenix, Ariz.) in the 400, 51.36, and a third by Heath Goertzen (SO/Newton, KS) in the triple jump with a jump of 41-2.25.

 

The Lady Threshers finished just behind Bethany College in the team scoring 102 to 97. The men finished sixth with 38 points with McPherson winning with 173 points.

 

"The ladies did a really good job all day," said Coach Hoskisson. "Every one of our ladies did their part and it is nice to see them rewarded for their effort."


The Threshers will be in action on Saturday at the Tabor College Invitational in Hillsboro.
