NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The wind was strong, but Bethel was stronger Thursday afternoon in their home-opener matchup with Central Christian. The Threshers successfully defended the Ward Tennis Center, as they were able to secure their first victory of the season, 6-3.
This match featured solid play all across the board. The Threshers were able to win two of their three doubles matches to open the match. The #3 doubles partners of Tyler Shima and Preston Gapter were able to win their match 9-7, and this was followed with a strong and exciting battle in the one position. Gabe Johnson and Ryan LaCombe earned a hard-fought victory over the Padilla twins for Central Christian, 9-8 (4).
The Threshers won four of the six singles matches, led by Johnson in the one spot. Johnson was able to defeat Andres Padilla 7-5, 6-3, completing a solid outing for himself.
Shima took down Bueford in the fourth position, 6-2, 6-4, while Grant Bellar and Shawn Bontrager easily took care of business in the fifth and sixth spots.
